Liquid Crystal Displays have become an indispensable part of our daily life. They permit direct communication at all times and are the windows to countless sources of information. It all started with the discovery of liquid crystals by Friedrich Reinitzer and Otto Lehmann at the end of the 19th century. Merck sold its first liquid crystal substances in 1904.
Sixty years later, the first LC display was developed. Visionary people who believed in the potential of this technology worked together to make it happen. Today, smart scientists are transforming ideas to create affordable devices for better living. Apart from LCDs as the leading technology, new developments are emerging that will open up new applications.
The display industry has already developed a number of devices based on resource-conserving and energysaving approaches. These have enabled 3D images on flat panel devices, they are making screens flexible and paper-like, and they are finding the right “touch” in communication. The industry is already working on the next generation of devices. It is exciting to be part of this dynamic and fast evolution.
As a pioneer and leader in liquid crystal and other display materials, Merck is honored to host the SID-ME Chapter Spring Meeting 2011. We would like to invite you to meet and share your ideas with the SID community. Please join us in an inspiring atmosphere to discuss with other experts visions of further innovations and improvements.
